Here at our dental practice, Dr. Tony Menendez can perform a biopsy to test gum tissue for disease or oral cancer. After gently obtaining a sample of cells or tissue from the patient, our dentist will send the sample to laboratory for testing. There, it will be examined under a microscope for abnormalities and may even be analyzed chemically.
There are four types of gum, or gingiva, biopsies:
- Incisional Biopsy — As the most common gingiva biopsy, incisional biopsies happen when a small sample of the targeted tissue is removed. This helps determine the source of the cells and whether they have spread from other parts of the body.
- Excisional Biopsy — Usually, small growths or lesions are removed completely during this biopsy.
- Percutaneous Biopsy — Tissue samples are collected with a fine or core needle, which penetrates lesions and allows for a larger sample to be collected.
- Brush Biopsy — This noninvasive procedure is conducted by vigorously rubbing a brush against the suspect area to obtain a tissue sample.
